Gablonzer Christmas Decorations

Our traditional Christmas display is dedicated to Gablonzer-style Christmas decorations for the second time. The wonderful Christmas trees, angels, reindeer, pins, and stars are created using the original, unique Gablonzer Industrie technique.

The manufacturing of Gablonzer Christmas decorations began in Jablonec nad Nisou in the former Sudetenland – now, the Czech Republic -- in the year 1550. It was then that first glass manufacturers and grinding shops appeared, and later these blossomed into a huge domestic industry.

The manufacturing of coloured glass resulted in it becoming a decorative article. The local jewellery makers expanded rapidly up to the end of the 18th century.  Their glass beads, and precious and semi-precious stone imitations were in huge demand internationally and Jablonec nad Nisou became a centre for fashion jewellery making. This unexpected, huge demand for Gablonzer jewellery continued after World War I.

Austria offered the jewellery specialists a home after 1945 and, thus, the chance to rebuild their business and manufacturing facilities. Original Gablonzer Industrie decorative elements were made in local workshops until the factory shut in 2008. We can present Christmas decorations such as Christmas trees, angels, reindeers, and stars made using the original Gablonzer technique as part of our Christmas collection, in cooperation with the Viennese Antiques specialist Edler.
