Bergmann Wiener Bronzen

Bergmann Bronzes at Huber & Lerner

The centerpiece of our Christmas display this year are the lovingly crafted bronze figures from the traditional company Bergmann Bronzen, which are still made today using historical molds and meticulous handwork. These figures are available exclusively from us during the Advent season!

Viennese bronze refers to cast small sculptures by Viennese manufacturers, which were widely distributed as decorative objects during the Gründerzeit (the period of rapid industrial expansion in Germany in the late 19th century). Franz Xaver Bergmann is considered the founder of Viennese bronze, as the first realistically painted bronzes were created under his direction. In 1900, he founded his renowned bronze foundry, trademarked by the jug.

Although many models fell victim to the collapse of the monarchy and the two World Wars, numerous treasures were salvaged, preserving the tradition. The company was closed after the First World War and during the Second. Later, his son Robert reopened the foundry and continued the business until Karl and Ilse Fuhrmann acquired all the remaining Bergmann models in 1960. Rita Peregi (née Fuhrmann) recently took over the business and has made it her mission to continue the Viennese bronze tradition under the name BERGMANN VIENNA BRONZES. Original Bergmann models continue to be produced in the Viennese workshop in the 15th district, preserving the traditional craftsmanship of Viennese bronzes.

Erotica and lifelike animal depictions, in particular, remain very popular. Original mold castings of the BERGMANN works are used for these pieces, which are then hand-chased, cold-painted, and/or naturally patinated. Over time, many renowned artists, such as O. Klar, Rinösl, Lorenzl, and C. Kauba, have also been included in the Bergmann collection.

Chasing & Painting

The surface of each individual casting is hand-chased to achieve its final and unique texture. Since there are very few true chaser chisels left in this field, preserving this craftsmanship is a top priority for the Bergmann company.

All Viennese bronzes are meticulously hand-painted by an expert in cold-painting techniques. The colors are specially mixed to achieve this natural and authentic look. Therefore, the painting may vary from figure to figure. The figures are still handcrafted and hand-painted, so slight variations in detail or color are normal. Each piece is unique and comes with a certificate of authenticity!
