St. Valentine's Day
St. Valentine’s Day is the day for lovers and is celebrated on 14th February every year. This tradition dates back to the time of Saint Valentine of Terni. According to legend, he gave a newly married couple fresh flowers from his garden.
The poem “Parlement of Foules” by the English writer Geoffrey Chaucer has a connection to St. Valentine’s Day. It was apparently written to celebrate St. Valentine’s Day at the court of Richard II and was first presented in 1383. The poem relates how birds gather around Mother Nature on St. Valentine’s Day to look for a mate. The idea that St. Valentine’s Day is a day for lovers also originates from its proximity to the coming of spring.
In 18th century England, people expressed their feeling for each other by sending flowers, sweets and greetings cards (Valentine’s). Huber & Lerner’s current assortment includes a variety of different cards and gift bags with beautiful floral motifs for your Valentine’s greetings.
Fancy Valentines were decorated with floral motifs, images of cupid and poems, as well as embossing, real lace and ribbons. Puzzles made of folded paper were also made. In the mid-19th century, the lace was made of paper. The creating of the Valentine could be very elaborate and expensive and this was expressed in the amount an admirer paid for it.
